In Years 11,12 and 13 students choose 5 NCEA courses for the first semester. These courses can continue for a whole year or change to new courses for the second semester. Students also have the opportunity to participate in rich vocational short courses determined by their interests and career goals. These courses lead to higher national qualifications at both academic and vocational levels. Each NCEA student is mentored by a senior staff member, who ensures every student is supported to gain their NCEA levels and the corequisites.
At Opononi Area School we strive to make curriculum delivery relevant to students both culturally and at the appropriate NZC level.
We also ensure that student voice plays a major role in our school. We have student leaders in Primary school and Secondary school. We are a school that implements RJ (Restorative Justice) RF (Relationships First), and PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning) practices.
Each student has a whanau teacher who looks after his/her pastoral and academic well-being. All students meet with their pastoral teacher daily to ensure they are on track.
